Sustainable branded spaces: low-waste signs, graphics and booths

Branded spaces generate a surprising amount of waste. These choices cut it without making your space look 'eco' unless you want it to.

Temporary graphics, seasonal windows and one-show booths often end up in landfill. As more businesses report on sustainability — and more customers notice — designing branded spaces to last, adapt and be recycled is becoming standard practice. Professional bodies in experiential design have published resources and guides to help designers make lower-impact choices.

Design to change, not to replace

The biggest sustainability win is designing systems where only the message changes:

  • Fabric frames let you swap a lightweight printed fabric instead of rebuilding a wall.
  • Rail and panel systems let signs move with you when you relocate.
  • Modular booths reconfigure across booth sizes and shows for years.
  • Insert-based room signs let you update names without new signs.

Material choices

Instead of… Consider… Why
PVC-based vinyl for every job PVC-free films and papers where suitable Avoids chlorine-based plastics
Foam board for event signs Paper-based honeycomb board Recyclable in many paper streams
Single-use banners Reusable fabric with swappable messages Fewer prints over time
New timber FSC-certified or reclaimed wood Responsible sourcing
Glass neon LED neon flex Far lower energy use, no mercury

Material availability and recyclability depend on your region’s facilities — ask suppliers what can actually be recycled locally, not just what’s theoretically recyclable.

  • Ask about water-based, latex or UV-curable inks and lower-impact production processes.
  • Order accurate quantities; overruns are waste.
  • Combine print runs and shipping where possible.
  • Choose local producers to cut transport for heavy items.

Plan the end of life

Before you install, decide what happens when it comes down. Can it be reused, donated, recycled or returned to the supplier? Some exhibit houses offer storage and refurbishment programmes. Write it into the brief.

Tell the story honestly

If sustainability is part of your brand, a small sign explaining the materials (“This wall is made from reclaimed timber from…”) adds credibility. Keep claims specific and accurate — vague green claims attract scrutiny.

The “Eco Raw” and “Biophilic Green” recipes in the Style Lab are good starting points for a visibly sustainable look.
